Late evening activity

  • Nov. 28th, 2009 at 11:48 PM
I'm making chocolate muffins, am listening to blip.fm, and am about to have a Stargate marathon. I haven't decided what episodes I'm watching--I watched "Hot Zone" earlier. I'm thinking of doing some SG-1 and some SGA. I have both series in their entirety on DVD. I might include "Doppleganger" on the list.

Okay, off to finish the muffins.
Sooo... I just got a Garmin 305!! My parents wanted to get me one for Christmas and told me to pick it out, so I ordered it on amazon when they were 53% off. I got the one with a heart rate monitor for only $139. Whee! So I've spent the afternoon playing with it and will hopefully take it out for its first run tomorrow. I don't want to be the girl with a million "i have a new Garmin" questions but I did want to ask you guys two quick things about it:

1) Someone previously asked whether the 305 can be worn in the rain. It looks like two people said yes it's fine and one person said it gets rain inside. It's supposed to rain tomorrow but I'm dying to take it out for a spin... do I seriously have a 1 in 3 chance of rain-ruining it?? Is it in fact *supposed* to be water resistant? Would you risk wearing it if it's rainy, or no?

2) Where do you ladies put the heart rate monitor strap relative to your sports bra?? I tried it on directly under the band of my sports bra and it just seems really... tight and uncomfortable. Will I get an accurate reading if I place it lower on my torso so it's not under the band of/interfering with my sports bra? Is there some other way I'm supposed to be wearing this thing?

Also, one non-Garmin related question for the fellas while I'm posting... my (male) running buddy is really tall and skinny and has been shopping for warm tights for winter running, but hasn't been able to find any pairs that are long enough. Regular tights seem to hit him mid-calf rather than coming down to the ankles. Do you guys know of any cold-weather tights that you can buy in a long length? He's looking for tights rather than pants. There have to be other tall skinny male runners out there... there *must* be some company that makes long lengths, or maybe a brand that just happens to run long for the regular fit? I told him I'd check in with you guys...

Thanks everyone!

Ordinarily I'd insist that dialogue from two different speakers always goes in two different paragraphs. But when the two paragraphs in question look like this:

Merlin said "That's none of your business" at the same time as Will said

"Yes."

Or like this:

Feeling the panic rising he called

"Arthur!" just as Arthur bellowed

"Merlin!"

Since both examples constitute single sentences with paragraph breaks in the middle, I think we can make an exception to the new-speaker-new-paragraph rule, don't you?

And when it looks like this:

Morgana looked at Gwen, and said,

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you any of this." Then she turned to Arthur.

"Our fathers knew each other. [...]" Her voice was steady, but thick with anger and accusation.

That's one speaker. One paragraph's probably good. Failing that, think you could find some way to redo the paragraphs so no one has to reread them to realize it's one speaker, not two? Name the speaker in each paragraph, end the first paragraph with a line of dialogue that doesn't end in a quotation mark, something.

Is it possible for my stamina to deteriorate greatly after not running for 2 weeks?

The first week I was busy to run. The second week I went on a tough mountain hike.

2 days after the hike I started running again. But I can only run half of what I used to, even though I'm running at a slower speed.

Could it be that my body is still worn out from the hike, or has my stamina really worsened?

Dear Camp Rock ficcer

  • Nov. 28th, 2009 at 10:22 PM
I am not exactly a member of your fandom, but I watched the movie. It was fun enough, in a Disney Channel way. However, your idea of an AU where Camp Rock was a special music camp for disabled kids had promise. The idea of Mitchie being blind and Shane having Asperger's and Social Anxiety Disorder was enough to make me want to read your fic to see how you'd pull it off, especially as I have a mild form of SAD myself.

ASDFGH

I don't even know where to begin, but let's start with the obvious. Someone would not go blind from getting soap in their eyes. Unless their home liquid soap dispenser is filled with some kind of soap/lye mixture. And if someone got soap in their eyes, the doctors would certainly not respond by SEDATING THEM AND LETTING THE ACID SOAP OF DOOM BURN THEIR EYES OUT because "There's nothing we can do for her".

...I mean the idea of a disabilityfic remix of Camp Rock set in some sort of postapocalyptic world where all medical knowledge has been lost is actually kind of cool, but I don't think that's what you were going for.

Clicking the back button before I get to the part about social anxiety disorder, thanks.

Another Review Fail

So it's a pairing A/B fic - a the-end-of-the-world, apocalypse type of fic and, towards the later chapters, is hinted that Character B got infected and might die. Possibly.
You, reviewer, left a comment somewhere along the lines of,

"Oh I hope it's just a misunderstanding! But omg if Character B dies, then maybe Character A can finally get with Character C! After all, Character C is so shippable with those fluffy hair and puppy dog eyes that just make you melt! <333"

No, just - no. I appreciate you reading a story that doesn't have your OTP in it, but did you really have to put it that way? You make it sound like you want Character B to die just so A/C can happen. I can't say it's appreciated. At all. :(

Also,
"Summary: Please read I swear it won't take much of your time <3" does not entice me to click on the link at all. If you were trying to be cute to net you readers, well, you failed. Try again.

Guys, the modern-girl-goes-back-in-time-to-the-Holocaust has been done, 100x better than 99.99% of you can do it.

Not that the Holocaust isn't a cliche setting anyway by this point for a Romeo and Juliet romance, given the sheer amount of fics set there, but...my point still stands. You deny that pretty much every tenth story or so at FictionPress in the Historical section has something to do with the Holocaust or WWII, more often the Holocaust?

A little creativity within that standard won't kill you.

EDIT: Also, I'm pretty damn sure the Nazis didn't wear name badges on their uniforms. That's a modern convention if I'm not mistaken.

Yay, gizmo!

  • Nov. 29th, 2009 at 1:01 AM
My dad's put a new battery in the gizmo on our crosstrainer thing, so I know how many calories I'm burning now. I did 30 minutes on there and burned 270 calories. Now I've never been aware of how many calories I've been burning. Would you say this a decent amount for the time spent exercising? 'Cause I don't have a clue. Thanks. :)

Wish You Were Here 10/10 (Complete)

  • Nov. 29th, 2009 at 2:45 AM
Title: Wish You Were Here 10/10
Author: Ennee Gray ([info]graylair )
Rating: PG13
Word count: 2 600 ish
Ships: Jack/Ianto (eventually, working on it, close.)
Summary: Ianto has to accept that she's gone before he can grieve. Jack is not ready to let Ianto go, but he still offers. Everything ends eventually, but at every end there's a new beginning. They weren't even friends. Yet.
Disclaimer: I don't own Torchwood or Doom or Doctor Who - the characters, idea, situations, etc. - nothing really. Rednex song isn't mine either.
A/N - WYWH is over. Ianto's okay and he's back and now we all know that it was Owen who gave Jack his split lip at the end of 'Cyberwoman'. ;) There is going to be a sequel, because just like Jack thinks - the journey is just beginning. However the earliest I'll post the first part of the next story arch will be at Christmas. Enjoy ;)

Fic

Hey! First time poster in this community! And I come bearing classic Fix-it-fic!

Series: Torchwood Unending
Fic: And I Fall Past the Heavens
Fandom: Torchwood
Author: Swift tales,
Category: Season 3 Fix-it, Angst, Romance,
Pairing/characters: Jack/Ianto, Gwen/Rhys, mentions of Martha, the Doctor and the Master in future chapters
Rating: NC-17, definitely
Spoilers: Basically the whole of Children of Earth and definitely mentions things from the first two seasons
Summary: Jack leaves the Earth behind because it's too small. The Universe, on the other hand, is as big as you get and has all the ingredients Jack needs to loose himself. But some things you can't forget or run away from.
Disclaimer: I do not own Torchwood or Ianto or anything really. *pouts*
Notes: This is the first arc of a three-arc series. The first arc is completely written (except for the last chapter), but the other two I haven't even started on yet and I don't know when they'll be written (A friendly warning for people who don't like WIPs). I will however, post on a regular basis, once a week on Saturday.
